Makeup mistakes that could be making your dry skin look even drier

Posted on January 16, 2022August 4, 2021

Dealing with dry skin is no piece of cake; there are so many complications, especially when it comes to applying makeup on dry skin in winters. The colder months of the year can be very unforgiving, this harsh weather affects all skin types, but people with dry skin type have to bear the brunt of this weather the most. The biggest problem with dry skin is its inability to retain moisture, and winter makes it even harder for this skin type to keep itself hydrated and nourished.

Another thing that troubles women with dry skin is having a hard time putting on makeup. Since winter often leaves dry skin extremely dry and flaky, it gets slightly difficult to apply makeup without making your dry patches look more prominent. Just because you are unable to achieve a flawless makeup application, it doesn’t mean you will skip makeup altogether. There are a few things that you might be doing wrong, which is causing your makeup to look flaky and patchy.

Ahead, we have put together a list of some makeup mistakes that could be making your dry skin look even drier.

Skipped using a hydrating primer

Failing to use a hydrating primer before putting on any makeup product could end up making your makeup look patchy and flaky. A hydrating primer is one of the main keys to creating a smooth base. While the market is brimming with various types of primer, women with dry skin should always invest in a hydrating primer. Primers containing one or more nourishing ingredients would make an excellent purchase; they won’t only help prevent dryness but will create a smooth and dewy base.

Using a brush to apply foundation

There are so many ways of applying foundation, some like to apply it with the help of their fingers, some use a brush, and some take the help of a damp makeup sponge. When it comes to dry skin, it’s best to apply your foundation using a damp makeup sponge instead of using a brush in winter. Take your foundation, dot it all over your face, and then blend it with the help of a damp makeup sponge. It is a great way to achieve a natural and airbrushed finish. Make sure to dab the sponge and not rub it on your face.

Powdering your entire face

One of the biggest makeup mistakes you can make in winter is applying powder on your entire face. This is a big no-no. While some areas on the face tend to get a bit oily even in winter, it doesn’t mean you will powder your entire face. You should apply powder only on those areas that are prone to creasing such as your nose, smile lines, and forehead.

Applying a powder blush

Using powder products on dry skin can make the skin look even drier; therefore, you should completely avoid using powder makeup products in winter. A powder blush can make your dryness look more prominent, therefore, you should stick to using a cream blush to add a hint of color to your cheeks and achieve a flushed appearance.

Not using a hydrating mist

Given the super drying nature of winter, it’s essential to invest in hydrating products, especially if you have dry skin. After completing your makeup, make sure to use a hydrating mist to provide an extra boost of hydration to your skin and keep your face from looking dry. You should keep a hydrating mist handy all the time, just spraying it on your face every few hours will help make your skin look plump, healthy, and hydrated.
