Things to look for in a shampoo if you have an oily scalp

Posted on October 18, 2021August 4, 2021

Be it your skin or scalp, it’s never too easy to deal with excess oiliness. While you can still tackle the excess oil on your face by cleansing the skin daily using a cleanser specifically formulated for oily skin, when it comes to oily scalp, you don’t really have the option to cleanse your scalp daily using a shampoo. Considering shampooing daily can lead to overly-dry, brittle and lifeless mane, it’s recommended to wash the hair no more than twice or thrice a week, which works for people with normal scalps, but not the ones with an oily scalp. Skipping hair wash even for a day ends up making the hair look flat and greasy, so what a girl gotta do in that case? If this is a question that comes to your mind every time you take a look at your flat, greasy hair, then you have come to the right place.

While a dry shampoo certainly is a blessing to every girl with an oily scalp, this product only offers temporary relief, and you need something that will actually address the problem. The health of your hair and scalp largely depends on the type of shampoo you use. And when it comes to buying a shampoo for oily scalp, here are a few things to look for in the product.

Don’t invest in nourishing formulas

Considering your scalp is already so oily, you don’t really need any product with nourishing ingredients or oils that will add more moisture to your scalp, thereby making it appear even oilier. Hence, you need to stay away from nourishing formulas. A detoxifying shampoo, on the other hand, makes an excellent choice when it comes to tackling oily scalp. These detoxifying shampoos are known to contain several detoxifying ingredients that help remove excess oil, product build-up, dirt, and other impurities from the scalp, which further helps to keep excess oil production in check.

Get your hands on volumizing or balancing shampoos

If you have little to zero knowledge about shampoo ingredients, the best thing you can do in this case is to read the front label of the product. Every bottle of shampoo features some terms on its front label, such as volumizing, balancing, etc. Shampoos claiming to offer body and volume to the hair are considered great options for people with an oily scalp. These shampoos don’t add extra moisture to the scalp, in fact, they help remove excess sebum.

Pick a sulfate-free shampoo

It is no longer a secret that sulfate is extremely harmful to the hair, and people should avoid using hair products that contain this ingredient. Sulfates are known to disrupt the pH level of the scalp, causing it to produce excess sebum. Therefore, when it comes to buying a shampoo, make sure to check the list of ingredients. If the product contains sulfate or other harsh ingredients, then you should pass it, but if the product is formulated with natural ingredients and doesn’t contain any harsh ingredient such as sulfate, then you can purchase it.

Use two different formulas

This technique will work well for those who have an oily scalp and dry tips. If you also belong to this category, then your hair could benefit from using two different shampoos instead of using just one formula for your whole hair. You can pick a detoxifying shampoo for your scalp to remove excess oil and hydrating shampoo for the tips of your hair to make them appear hydrated. This way you won’t only be able to fix your oily scalp but will also be able to make your dry tips look not so dry.
